Weekly Photo Challenge: structure (of something typically overlooked)
After blogging about my garden, a lot, I’ve chosen to use a picture of my sunflower for this weekly photo challenge. I recently blogged some facts about the sunflower and I learnt something new about the structure while doing my research for the blog post.
The Helianthus annuus has a complex structure. The yellow petals are referred to as the ray floret while the brown “lumps” (Becky terminology, not scientific terminology) are actually disc florets which are arranged spirally, oriented to the next disc floret by 137.5°. I think I read somewhere that there is a mathematical equation to aid in us drawing a disc floret spiral pattern!
